The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is to invest up to £10 million in a single collaborative R&D project to demonstrate the capability of the Internet of Things (IoT) in a city region.

If you are a city and would like to engage with HyperCat Ltd, the NFP that owns the HyperCat brand, manages the governance of the collaboration and the processes and IP to build open, interoperable standards, then read on ..

HyperCat Ltd. Proposal to City Leads for Participation in Demonstrator

About HyperCat Ltd.

HyperCat Ltd is an independent "not-for-distribution" company which oversees HyperCat. It exists purely for the benefit of the community. Its directors are:
  • Pilgrim Beart. CEO of IoT company 1248, Pilgrim has previously founded several connected-product companies including AlertMe which manages millions of connected products and was sold in 2015 for $100m. Pilgrim chaired the first phase of HyperCat development, and 1248 has played a leading role in developing the specification and supporting tools https://www.linkedin.com/in/pilgrimbeart
  • Justin Anderson. CEO of Smart Systems company Flexeye, Justin is also VC of techUK's IoT Council and sits of their Public Sector Board. Justin leads the current phase of HyperCat development. https://www.linkedin.com/in/justinpeanderson
  • Merlin, Lord Errol. A cross-bench member of the House of Lords with a strong IT background. Chair of the HyperCat Consortium. https://www.linkedin.com/pub/merlin-erroll/0/842/343

About The HyperCat community

HyperCat is an ecosystem focussed on breaking down silos to deliver interoperability in the Internet of Things. The HyperCat specification is open and freely available, and supported by an increasing number of vendors. See http://hypercat.io for more information.

The IoT City Demonstrator - Interoperability Challenge

The project starts in early 2016 and runs for up to 2 years. It is "industrial research" focussed on delivering benefits to citizens, business and the local authority. Its focus is not on developing new technology, but rather on applying it, so it should use existing, proven technologies and platforms.

The challenge is how to connect them together quickly and in a way which enables 3rd parties to discover and create further value for the city. This is the principle benefit of HyperCat - it allows off-the-shelf IoT components to be connected in a way that is open, enabling this exponential growth in value. It also helps prevent vendor lock-in and "silos".

Our Proposed Involvement

HyperCat is an open specification, freely available for use by any city, and has been mandated for use in this city demonstrator. HyperCat Ltd can help you make the most of interoperability within your city bid - which McKinsey estimates will unlock 40% of the value IoT can deliver to a city.

  • IoT Interoperability Planning: In the first Quarter, getting all consortium players around a table, identifying the interoperability and security challenges around the delivery, agreeing a plan for integration and creating a cohesive project dynamic and working group that crosses all use cases.
  • IoT Interoperability Education: Explaining how HyperCat works and its benefits to project participants and third-parties.
  • IoT Interoperability Evangelism: Reaching out into the existing HyperCat community and grow it further (including developers, SMEs, the selected incubator and city service providers) to promote engagement with the City Demonstrator and the benefits of secure interoperability and openness and the HyperCat standard.
  • IoT / Smart City Standards Evolution: Identifying ways in which the current HyperCat specification needs to change, managing that process of change, locating and delivering the required technical expertise and feeding into other BSI Smart City standards.
  • IoT Developer Support: Including development of HyperCat tools, libraries and related activities and material.
  • Active participation in Advisory and Steering Group.

HyperCat Ltd. would take responsibility for all of these activities and be paid for delivering them. It will deliver some itself (through its directors) and deliver some by sub-contracting out to third-parties. In all cases, this would be done "at cost", with full transparency.

The proposed project cost to engage HyperCat Ltd over two years would be between £200k to £400k, depending on final scope and agreed deliverables.

If you are a city, and would like to find out more about this proposal, please provider your details in the form below.

I would like to talk to a Director of HyperCat Ltd about their potential participation:
