#HyperCatCity ecosystem of industry leaders will create a ‘modular IoT Smart City framework’ to prove economic value to Smart City buyers and create new solutions and access to new markets. It is supported by the Mayor of London and is working in partnership with Bristol Is Open and Milton Keynes.
Smart Cities are urban places where information technology is combined with infrastructure, architecture, objects and people to address social, economic and environmental problems. 2014 was an exciting year for European technology as debates on IoT and its application within smart cities continued to grow. The awareness within the UK government has grown exponentially and is just warming up. For example the new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Smart Cities, set up by Dan Byles MP, and which Lord Erroll vice-chairs, has become most popular, and Sir Mark Walport published his review of IoT, which reaffirms the government's commitment to IoT.
According to BIS, the global market for Smart City technology solutions and services will be over £250 billion by 2020. Despite uncertainty in many areas of the political and economic landscape, UK has a great opportunity to take leadership of this fast growing market given the existing strengths in design, research, finance and engineering services.
This reception is one of a series of discussions and debates around this topic and is aimed at smart city leaders with responsibility for delivering innovative city, infrastructure and building services. Dan Byles MP will be providing a keynote speech to set the scene for round table discussions, bringing city CIOs together with leading technology companies, to explore the opportunities and pitfalls ahead.
The reception is sponsored by Symantec & Huawei and builds on the £8m investment from InnovateUK to develop HyperCat, an interoperable IoT specification. HyperCat is supported by over 300 companies, large and small. In December 2014, it was announced at the Assembly Chambers, City Hall, that the London Data Store will build a HyperCat API for city data to enable software developers to build new applications. The Digital Catapult has also agreed that its data will be HyperCat enabled.
