Hypercat Standard Presented to Media

4/7/2014

On Thursday 26 June 2014 Hypercat members Flexeye and 1248 led a press conference hosted by cross-bench champion of IT and digital economy issues Merlin, Lord Erroll, who introduced Hypercat to the waiting media as the ‘world wide web for machines’.

Indeed, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who’s world wide web specification unlocked the potential of the net, didn’t fail to get a mention as the Hypercat standard was described as being capable of unlocking the full potential of the Internet of Things, irreversibly changing how, why and in what way we all work and play and bringing with it pivotal changes in industry and business structures.

The lively roundtable discussion gave press an opportunity to probe panelists including Andrew Tyrer of the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) on deliverables from the TSB-funded Phase I of the project, which gave rise the new standard.

CEO of Flexeye Justin Anderson’s focus was on the enormous potential for UK industry. In an exclusive interview with TechRadar he said: ‘It's only by creating a collaborative, innovative environment that we can genuinely compete against other nations in the IoT sphere, and at the moment we're very well positioned to do that. We can take this next step and lead the world. What does that mean? If we can drive more than our fair share of value-add over this next period and achieve that $100 billion, that would be a great boost for British industry, jobs, taxes and UK exports."

Chief Executive of 1248 Pilgrim Beart explained how Hypercat works, saying: “The standard enables apps to discover data across all services, freeing machines from the human programmer bottleneck and allowing a many-to-many relationship to develop, which is the key to the Internet of Things.”

Other panelists included IBM’s Master Inventor, Andy Stanford-Clark, who brought a real life example of Hypercat in action, and senior representatives from ARM, BT and IBM – all key partners who have helped develop the standard over the past year.

Attending media included BBC News, New Scientist, ZDNet, The Register, ITPro, and more.
